Next time, before you dump sanitary napkins and napkins together, think twice!!

The sanitary napkins and diapers must be handed over in separately packed wrappings or else the residents would have to pay a fine of Rs 100. This was mentioned by GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation.

Mr. N. Mahesan, chief engineer, SWM, explained that a fine of Rs 100 would be levied for each violation while collecting the wastes.  He added that it would lead to health risk in the GCC workers who collect the waste. In the resource recovery centres, the workers find it difficult to segregate the waste and then send it for incineration.

Awareness drives would be carried out regarding sanitary  waste segregation. Mr. Mahesan then mentioned that a separate bin for sanitary waste in the battery operated vehicles would be there hereafter. To process the waste, GCC would be adding more incineration plants in Chennai city dump yards.

As per some residents from Mogappair, biodegradable as well as non-biodegradable waste were handed separately. It must be noted that the GCC has placed multiple bins in Mogappair and workers unload all the wastes all together. Segregation process in all the points must be monitored. There are some residents who have brought out that battery vehicles don`t have garbage bins.
