The news that has come out is that work on laying a new road from Thoraipakkam and Canal Bank Road is now going on at brisk rate and about 50% of the 750m stretch has been completed.

It was later brought out by an officer that embankments were being formed and layers of blue metal of various sizes would be laid. He mentioned that this road is phase 1 of the plan to connect ECR with Rajiv Gandhi Salai in Chennai. For land acquisition alone, Rs 146 crores has been allotted and the total cost of 6 lane road is Rs 176 crores.

As per an engineer associated with this project, material would be allowed to settle for about 6 months and later top layers would be laid. The entire work would be completed by the end of September. This project when it becomes realty would improve the connectivity of the motorists on OMR in Chennai.

It is worthy to note that the road would end at canal bank road as of now and the motorists would be able to cross the Buckingham Canal using small bridges and then use the internal roads like Pandian Salai, Vidyanathan Salai etc to reach ECR. It was later mentioned by an official that there were 86 structures that were encroaching upon the PWD land and soon these would be removed.

Steps must have been taken to widen the existing bridges across the canal built by GCC many years back. This was as per a recent belonging to Kandanchavady.

A resident from Thoraipakkam spoke about how more such roads connecting ECR and Pallikaranai and Medavakkam must be planned so that traffic at OMR could be managed well. The residents later mentioned that there would be 5 years of metro train construction works and just 4 lanes would be effectively available.
