Varsities in the US are recording an rising demand for Under Graduate (UG) courses from India students. Statistics from the United States - India Educational Foundation (USIEF) at the US Consulate in Chennai show that about 64 percent of Indian students joined PG courses at US universities last year, while 12.4 percent chose UG courses.

Sources and officials at USIEF say, The number of those choosing UG courses has been steadily rising over the past few years. Inquiries from high school students across streams for UG level courses had increased. A main attraction is degree programmes offering dual options such as computer science with biology or physics with music. There is a good interdisciplinary approach at the UG level which is drawing students.

Affordability has been one of the factors that have made numbers at the UG level lower that PG. But data shows that more families now appear to be willing to shell out the cost. According to the data, overall, there has been a 30 percent increase in the number of Indian students going to the US over last year - 1,32, 888 Indian students are now in US.

The most popular stream at UG level is STEM - science, technology, engineering and mathematics. A maximum of 37.5 percent choose engineering. Maths and computer science come in next at 31.4 percent. Business and management, life sciences, health, social sciences, humanities and English are other popular choices.

A strong research base and practical application of engineering has been attributed to the interest in US universities. An average of 1500 visa interviews are held every day ahead of the academic year that starts in August - September. In 2015, 72000 F1 student visas were issued in the country. Over the last five years, Chennai has seen a 97 percent jump in student visa numbers.

Says an expert, Students keen on studying abroad should begin preparations at least 18 months in advance. Application deadlines range from November to January or longer depending on the university.
