The director of the Chennai Meteorological Centre explained that with the onset of the northeast monsoon rainy season, a low depression zone has formed over the central Bay of Bengal.

A research paper written by IIT Bombay has said that Chennai is more vulnerable to climate hazards compared to metros such as Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru and Delhi, mainly due to high population density and built-up area.

An official of the Meteorological Centre has mentioned: Depression which was formed in south west bay of Bengal is still stationed there. Due to this there was 5 cm rain at Kaatupakkam near Chennai.

At a time when the northeast monsoon has set, the depression formed in the central Bay of Bengal is still stationed there. Because of this, there will be isolated rains in one or two places of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Southwest monsoon rains withdraw on 30th October and the northeast monsoon set in. Though the monsoon set in late, heavy rainfall was expected but there was only sporadic rainfall in some places.
