Also called as ‘Sideropaenia’, iron deficiency is the state or condition where our body has not got enough iron to supply for its needs. This iron deficiency is a common nutritional deficiency in us. For producing haemoglobin, iron is needed. This haemoglobin helps RBC’s deliver oxygen around the body. Body function in us gets hampered when tissues and muscles in us do not receive sufficient oxygen. This happens when our body lacks haemoglobin content. This is called as anaemia.

These are the signs or symptoms our body shows when we are iron deficient.

Unusual tiredness: This iron deficiency in us is indicated by the unusual tiredness or feeling fatigued all the time. Our energy levels get affected because our body would not be able to carry enough oxygen to our cells. Inspite of sleeping well also this tiredness would not go in us.

Shortness of breath: It must be noted that when haemoglobin content is low in us then oxygen levels would be low. Our muscles don’t get sufficient oxygen to do activities like walking etc. As our body tries for more oxygen our breathing rate increases in us and there would be shortness in breathing.

Discoloured or pale skin is present: It is known that haemoglobin gives blood its red colour. Deficiency in iron would make the blood look less red in colour. The skin looks pale and dull due to this reason. Our nails, gums, face and total body could be dull. This is one important sign of iron deficiency in our body.

Presence of Pica syndrome in us:  Not many know that iron deficiency in our body could lead to pica syndrome or eating of inedible things like coins, clothes, wooden items etc. The presence of pica syndrome is a clear sign of iron deficiency.

Loss of hairs: In persons with iron deficiency their hair follicles would not get enough oxygen and they go to resting mode. Hair fall takes place and hairs do not grow back until they get sufficient oxygen.

Headaches and dizziness: This is also one important sign or symptom of iron deficiency in our body. Enough oxygen is not reaching the brain and it results in severe headaches and dizziness feeling.

Irregular heartbeats: To carry oxygen to other body parts, the heart has to do more work when the haemoglobin level in us is low. This could lead to irregular heartbeats etc. This heart palpitation is a symptom or sign of iron deficiency.
