The sudden collection of revised penalty amounts for traffic rule violations has taken many vehicle drivers in Chennai by surprise!!

Earlier it was mentioned that the new rates would come into effect from 28th of October onwards only. Yesterday, many motorists were surprised when traffic police personnel issued challans for violating traffic rules. The reason for that was due to the completion of the calibration of the e- challan server before the stipulated time. This has caught the attention of many now.

Various traffic violations such as riding two wheelers without wearing helmets, riding triples, not fastening the seat belt in the car etc were noted by the traffic policemen. Point is that  the personnel belonging to GCTP or Greater Chennai Traffic Police collected the revised fine amount for these above said traffic violations.

It must not be forgotten that the revised penalty rates came out last week but the GCTP have made it clear that they would be collecting the revised fine amount for traffic violations from 28th October for the sake of calibration of e-challan machines. It is now said that the erratic vehicle drivers have felt the pinch as they had paid the revised penalty amount for violating the traffic rules in the city.

On Tuesday night, a press release came out from GCTP and it was mentioned that the revised spot fine amounts were updated on the e-chalan central server maintained by the NIC or National Informatics Centre.

At several junctions in Chennai, the traffic police personnel stopped the vehicles for traffic rules violation. Based on the new rates , the traffic policemen started to issue e-challans for the drivers. There were arguments between the vehicle drivers and traffic policemen regarding time for complying with the rules.

It was later explained by a police personnel at Arumbakkam that they were briefed by their senior officers regarding how to implement the revised fines. He added that more pillion riders were not wearing helmets. He concluded that Rs 1000 would be collected as the revised penalty from  both riders and pillion riders for not wearing helmets. Across Chennai, as many as 255 e-challan machines were being used by the traffic policemen.
