Know about this latest nightmare for the Chennai residents?

The SWD works have been going on in several places in Chennai. In localities such as WallTax Road, KK.Nagar, Perambur, Mambalam etc, the pits dug for the SWD works have not been covered with barricades.

In the rainy season, these open pits would be nightmares for many pedestrians as well as to many two wheeler riders etc. This was according to some residents. No action has been taken till now despite several complaints issued by the residents.

It is really shocking to note that there are half a dozen open pits over the Storm Water Canal on the Perambur High Road. The pedestrians walk along the edges of the roads during flooding as they fear about falling into these open pits. No barricades or warning boars have been placed around the dug up sites. Recently, a 24 year old journalist died after falling into the open pit for SWD and it grabbed many eyeballs.

As per a resident from Perambur, over the last few weeks local body authorities have been informed about the safety issues  and no barricades have been placed near the open pit dug for SWD works. In some places the open pits have been covered with plywood boards. He spoke about how in the rainy season many pedestrians and motorists face life threatening situations.

Many residents have come to the conclusion that the government would take action only if there was some accident leading to loss of life. The death of the journalist has opened the eyes of GCC authorities as they have now covered all the open pits across the city. This has been done after 2 months of ongoing SWD works. It was brought out by another resident that to avoid mishaps many residents do not come out of their houses unless there is some emergency. The issues due to street lights have been posing a threat to many.
