National Disaster Response Force - starts action on Cooum river!

The National Disaster Response Force commenced its activity to clean up the Chennai Cooum river yesterday (Friday, 1st November).

The governor of Tamil Nadu, Panwarilal Purohit inaugurated the event. He addressed the gathering:

The National Disaster Response Force plays a prominent role in strengthening the country�s defense activities along with the Army and the Border Security Force.

The National Disaster Response Force has so far been engaged in 3040 rescue activities. The fore has safely rescued 6.7 Lakhs people who were struggling to save their lives.

Apart from the disaster rescue activities, the National Disaster Response Force also imparts training on things to do and things not-to-do in the disaster period/place and how to be safe.

Thus, the National Disaster Response Force, which is fully engaged with the high social responsibility, has now taken up the challenging task of cleansing the Cooum river and activities in order to prevent damages caused by floods. This is worthy of high appreciation.

During the event, an exhibition was set up to explain the function and activities of the Force and the equipment used. The equipment used to detect whether the people caught in building collapses are alive and powerful cameras that help capture the photo through tiny holes, the equipment used for dismantling/cutting off the parts of constructions was put up for display.

The Senior Commander, Arkonam Section, Rekha Nambiar of the National Disaster Response Force shared:

There are 1500 people from various sections are engaged in this challenging Cooum river cleansing project by the National Disaster Response Force jointly with CISF, CRPF, The Chennai Metro City Corporation, Indian Red Cross Society, NCC, and the students of Saveetha Medical College.

The team is engaged in riding on a rubber boat, casting the net, collecting the waste material and taking it ashore.

The Chennai Metro City Corporation staff is engaged in removing the garbage.

This activity would be performed twice a month in 11 locations in the Chennai Metro City including Koyambedu, Anna Nagar, Nungambakkam, Mehta Nagar, Egmore, and Chintadripet.
