The vegetable traders have informed that the vegetable prices are down by up to 20% as compared to the last month. However, there are prospects of the vegetable prices shooting up again next week!
During the past few weeks, the vegetable prices had shot up astronomically main because there was less growth of vegetables due to various reasons thus a substantial reduction in the quantity of vegetables reaching the wholesale vegetable market at Chennai Koyambedu. For example, green peas were sold at Rs. 130 per kg, beans at Rs. 100, brinjal at Rs. 50, tomato at Rs. 40, broad beans (avaraikkai) at Rs. 50 and drumstick at Rs. 60.
The traders had informed that the price increase was mostly attributed to the lesser quantity of vegetables arriving at the wholesale market because of lesser growth and yield!
In this situation, the traders informed that there is a recent trend of reduction in vegetable prices over the last week!
In this regard, the treasurer of the Federation of the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale traders of vegetable, fruits, and flowers, shared:
As the growth/yield of the vegetables had reduced considerably, they were transported only in 300 trucks per day over the last few days. Presently, the growth/yield has increased and hence more quantities of vegetables have started arriving from Karnataka, Andhra, and other places.
This has led to a reduction in vegetable prices by 15% to 20%. Presently there have been good rains in Karnataka. This has affected vegetable growth. As it rained heavily in Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu as well, the growth of carrot, beans, and beetroot has been affected severely.
The impact of this would be realised only by the next week. Due to this reason and also as there are auspicious wedding days in the next weeks, there are very strong prospects of an increase in vegetable prices by next week.
