Bore well rates increases now as the water level goes down in Chennai

Sinking bore wells for the sake of water has become a common activity now in the city of Chennai. It is now said that the rates for sinking bore wells have increased and many bore well companies are literally digging gold. From the earlier rate of Rs 150, the cost of digging 1ft of soil in Chennai has gone up to Rs 300 now. The reason for this increase is due to the factors like more demand for water, due to lack of man power etc. It must be noted that the bore well rates in the Chennai city outskirts are lesser.

A resident belonging to Kodambakkam explained how he made several enquiries with the bore well companies for sinking a bore well in his house. He spoke about how those outside Chennai charge Rs 75 to Rs 100 but those in Chennai demand Rs 300 to Rs 400 per foot. Point is these companies were not interested in taking up the contract as the associations would not let them. It must be noted that 3 to 4 associations in Chennai with 300 contractors decide on the rate and stick to it.

There has been steady increase in the rates and lack of regulation has led these associations to do what they wish. Information is it takes 2 hours to sink 100 ft bore well and it involves 12 to 15 workers. It was later mentioned by a geologist Mr. Saravanan that sinking a bore well requires digging alluvial soil, sand or clay for a depth of 80 ft to 90 ft before going into hard rock. The cost of sinking bore wells is different.

Mr. Saravanan expressed his unhappiness about the companies charging the same for both types of digging and said it was unreasonable.

An Ambattur based resident explained about how he had spent an amount of Rs 3 lakhs for sinking a bore well of depth 800 ft. He added that the demand for sinking bore wells is very high and companies take 10 to 15 days to come to the house. He finally threw light on how the companies have pending orders of 30 to 50 and how residents need them more now.

Mr. Bright Kumar, Chennai Rig Owners Borewell Association secretary and owner of Arumaidas Bore well Services, spoke about how demand is responsible for increase in the rates. He then added that presently his company is involved in digging bore wells of depths 300 ft to 1000 ft. He explained about the hike in the rates and said various factors like manpower, hassles with the police for the entry of vehicles and diesel rates contribute to the hike. Information is one litre of diesel is required for digging every foot.
