Restoration of roads in Chennai and in TN, Rs 1000 crores to be spent

There are many damaged roads in Chennai city plus in other urban local bodies of TN is a known fact. The latest news is these damaged roads would be restored or re-laid at a cost of Rs 1000 crores. This was according to the municipal administration minister, Mr. S.P. Velumani.

In the assembly, he announced about the civic projects for local bodies in TN. The minister spoke about how in addition to 387 km bus routes and 5525 km interior roads in Chennai, a total length of 23,464 km of roads were maintained by 14 other corporations and 121 municipalities in the state.

In 10 corporations, smart roads including footpaths, medians, ducts, cycle tracks, parking and lighting are being implemented. The natural calamities plus sewage network projects and water supply schemes have led to the damage of 6083 km of roads. This damage of roads took place in the last 8 years.

The minister later explained about how restoration work was taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 3050 crores. He revealed that out of 5310 works that were taken up, 4947 has been completed at the cost of Rs 2560 crores in the local bodies in TN. By the month of March in 2020, 5 underground sewage network projects would be completed at an estimated cost of Rs 500 crores.

Important information collected is work on the development on the sewer network have been taken up in cities like Trichy, Vellore, Tirunelveli, Tiruppur and Coimbatore etc. In the urban areas, there are 7.65 lakhs households and 6.10 lakhs households have got service connections following the underground sewage network projects in the local bodies.

To generate power from waste in urban places and to promote solid waste management, state government would sign MoU with NTPC. It is worthy to note that a total of 15 corporations and 121 municipalities generate 7011 tonnes of biodegradable waste and 6733 tonnes of non-biodegradable waste every day. In all the local bodies, a special cell would be formed for waste management and this was as per the minister, Mr. S.P. Velumani. Appropriate technology suitable for local conditions for each body would be adopted.
