Uninterrupted water supply for the residents of Ambattur, Mogappair etc soon

Located at a distance of around 27 kms from Chennai, Erumaiyur is making hot news now. The superb piece of news is the residents belonging to places like Ambattur, Mogappair etc in Chennai would soon get uninterrupted supply of water. The point is metro water is working to draw water from the quarries present at Erumaiyur.

According to a senior officer belonging to the metro water department, the laying of pipelines has been taking place now and by this channelling of water to treatment plant located at Chembarambakkam would be possible. Once the treatment gets finished then the water is enriched with minerals and then distributed through pipes to the residents.

For one week of time, trial operations would take place and then the water would be distributed to the residents belonging to places like Ambattur and Mogappair. The senior Metro water official spoke about how from the first week on the month of July, the water would be supplied to these residents. It is highly shocking to note that residents living in the elevated places like Venkatapuram, Krishnapuram, Thiruvenkata Nagar etc get water just 3 times in a week.

It must be taken into account that water is supplied on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for 45 minutes. The point is each household gets about 300 litres of water and the water flow is slow.  This was confirmed by Mr. D, Sundararaman who is the secretary of Venkatapuram residents Welfare Association.

Raw as well as untreated effluents have been let into the water bodies present in Ambattur and Korattur lakes and as a result of this water from these water bodies cannot be used. The process of bio-remediation must be carried out otherwise the water quality would not improve. This process would not be done now.

Mr. Sundararaman later spoke about how the metro water has to de-silt and deepen the lakes and put them through ecological restoration to improve the groundwater levels in Ambattur and Korattur. It is surprising to mention here that in the 1970`s in Ambattur water was present at a depth of 30 ft. Good water is not available in some parts even after digging to a depth of 400 ft.
