Push carts to be used by the vendors at Marina Beach

Posted on: 19/Apr/2019 9:49:56 AM
For all these years, people visiting the popular Marina Beach in Chennai would have come across temporary or permanent structures put up by the vendors. These structures would not be there anymore. It is said that GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has informed the Madras High Court that the vendors would not be allowed to put up any permanent or temporary structures in the Marina Beach.

The important point is push carts would be used by the vendors between 2 pm to 9 pm instead of the above mentioned structures. A submission regarding this was made by the additional advocate general Mr. S.R. Rajagopal on behalf of the corporation before the division bench of Justice Manikumar and Justice Subramoniam Prasad. According to the GCC it is now clear that there would also be two 900 watt LED high mast flood lights on the Marina Beach and this would be in addition to the existing ones. The main purpose is to provide safety for the visitors.

It must be noted that a submission was made by the principal chief conservator of forests regarding the Olive Ridley turtles coming to sea shore between the months of December and March between 12:30 am to 4 am to lay eggs and then returning back to the sea. Based on this submission, the court had given instructions to the GCC to consider the regulations and take appropriate action while fixing the lights. The shocking piece of information is the presence of lights attracts the turtles towards the shorelines and these turtles face the risk of getting killed by speeding vehicles.

The important point is the GCC had suggested the shops should be allowed to function between 4 pm and 9 pm. It was pointed out by Mr. S.R. Rajagopal that vendors faced difficulties and it has been decided to permit the shops to open from 2 pm to 9 pm with grace time of 30 minutes if needed.

As per the corporation, the vendors would be allotted 48 sq ft that is the existing arrangement as there was no objection to the allotted space. The information collected is the vendors have agreed that they would bring only push carts and would not be involved in putting up of temporary or permanent structures on the beach. It is important to note that the bench had directed the corporation to file a report with details of number of shops to be accommodated, place of location, arrangement of the shops, cooking and use of cylinders etc.
