Posted on: 21/Jul/2018 12:32:36 PM
Southwest Monsoon is the most awaited period in India. This four-month long phase has different shades for different parts of the country. While, South India is the first to welcome Monsoon, usually, by the end of May or June first, it reaches the northern parts of the country by June end.

The metropolitan cities of the country are also enjoying or experiencing different shades of Monsoon this season. While it rains and rains in Mumbai, Chennai city usually remains dry and warm.

Let us see what Monsoon has brought this season over the four major cities of the country and what else is stored in for them:

Delhi: Rain in Delhi have been frequenting for the last couple of days, however, have mainly remained patchy and localized in nature. Prolonged spells have remained absent from showing up on the city for a very long time now.

In general, the month of August is the rainiest month during Monsoon, July being on the second mat. The city usually records 187 mm of rains during the month of July and till now, it has recorded 153.7 mm of rains.

As of now also, we expect, Delhi is expected to see some more short spell of rains for the next two to three days. Rain activity would be higher on July 22.

Thus, with 10 more days in hand, it is very likely that the national capital would be able to surpass its monthly average rainfall.

Mumbai: The month of July is the rainiest month for Mumbai. The city constantly records showers of varied intensity. The dream city remains mostly pleasant with the day temperatures settling in mid-30’s and minimums in mid-20’s. The average monthly rainfall for the state remains at a whopping 840.7 mm and until now, the city has recorded 1092.4 mm of rains.

In fact, Monsoon has shown its vigorous phase this season with the city recording three-digit rains on four consecutive days. However, soon the rains over the city started reducing and apart from one more occasion, otherwise, the rains remained mainly light.

As of now also, we do not expect any significant increase in the rainfall activity and the city would continue to record light rains only for the next two to three days.

Chennai: Southwest Monsoon does not impact Chennai much. In fact, being a rain-shadow area, Chennai usually remains warm and moist during Monsoon season. The city usually records the major chunk of rains during Northeast Monsoon season and there are a very few occasions when Chennai experiences rainfall during Southwest Monsoon.

Even if it does, it is mainly when Monsoon is weaker over the other parts of the country. In the month of July, Chennai accounts for a total of 103.8 mm of rains, however, its actual rains are close and is 96 mm.

In the last ten years, there has been only one occasion when Chennai city has recorded three-digit rain to the tune of 206 mm in July. Otherwise, the city has mostly seen rainfall in two digits.

As of now also, the weather of Chennai is likely to remain dry and warm with occasional showers. The daytime high would remain in higher 30’s meanwhile, the minimums may settle in the upper 20’s.

Kolkata: For Kolkata also, July is the rainiest montnth with the normal rainfall accounting to 396 mm. Till date, the city has recorded a good 115.4 mm of rains. The city has experienced rains almost every day so far in the month, but the rains have mainly remained in single digits. So far, there have been only six occasions when the state capital has recorded double-digit rainfall.

However, in the next 48 hours, we can expect some good showers to occur over the city which would further enhance the monthly rainfall status.
