Placing a demand for hiking engineering course fee with effect from the next academic year, the self-financing college representatives were indulged in a meeting with Justice N.V. Balasubramanian committee yesterday (Thursday).
On both management as well as government quota seats, these colleges are demanding about 50 percent hike in fees. At present, for government quota seats, in private colleges, the fee is Rs 40,000 and for management quota, it is Rs 70,000.
The reason behind plea for fee hike is to compensate salary we pay for teachers to be on par with AICTEs scale of pay, speaks out R.S Munirathinam, the president of Consortium of Self-Financing Professional, Arts and Science Colleges, Tamil Nadu.
In the AICTEs handbook, there are specifications mentioned about the maximum allowed fees amount for engineering courses. However, a lot of students hailing from poor background pursue engineering. So, we are not requesting for maximum hike.
The consortium also wants the fees structure of all engineering colleges in southern districts to be submitted to them.
Committee sources state that they have just got into discussions with private colleges. Each of the association has shared a unique perspective. We shall take the final call keeping in mind all the factors and representations. By next week, the final decision is likely. It is a tough phase for Tamil Nadu Engineering colleges. There are about 1 lakh vacant seats. Engineering admission will also get impacted by the IT job cuts.
