As the NEET (National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test) for admission to medical courses was rather tough, the attention of the students with good marks in the +2 examinations is now drawn towards agricultural courses.

17 affiliated colleges and 21 private agricultural colleges are functioning under the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. There are 6 B. Sc. courses and 7 B. Tech. courses on offer. A single application is required to apply. The seats are filled up after counselling.

Apart from the above, there are agricultural graduate courses offered by the Annamalai University and Dindigul Gandhigramam University.

As the number of seats is less, the competition among the students to join these courses is more intense.

As it is observed that this year NEET was rather tough, it is gathered that the students have started getting more eager to join agricultural courses.

A professor shared the information that one of the main reasons for the rush to join agricultural colleges is the job opportunities offered by both public and private sectors for the graduates in agriculture.

Another important factor is that the syllabus for agricultural courses is designed for the students with a good chance to do well in the competitive examinations like IAS, IPS, IFS, Group-1 and Group-2.

This is why the students give priority to agricultural courses on pair with the medical and engineering course.

Maybe the interest shown by the students this year for agricultural is due to the tough NEET, It is seen that both English medium and Tamil medium students who wrote NEET found it quite tough.

This situation has made the students to turn towards agricultural courses.

There are plenty of opportunities for the agriculture graduates to become employed as Officers in agricultural and horticultural fields, or as scientists in agricultural universities or as Assistant professors in the agricultural colleges.

There are attractive opportunities for agricultural graduates in grain warehouses and banks. Other wide-spread opportunities are available throughout India, such as private estates, fertilisers and insecticide manufacturing companies, seed manufacturing companies, coconut/coffee/rubber estate boards as officers or scientists.

There are also good prospects to work abroad or even becoming an entrepreneur.

All the factors explained above have led to the increasing interest of the students to joining agricultural courses. Since the release of the +2 public examination results, over 25000 candidates have so far applied online to join agricultural courses. As the time is still available, till 4th June to apply online, there is a fairly good scope for this figure to go up by a few more thousands.
