Temples forced to exchange cash in hundis

Posted on: 10/Nov/2016 12:53:13 PM
Temples in Tamil Nadu have been forced to open their hundis earlier than planned and exchange the cash in them, following the demonetization of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000.

The annual Kanda Shashti festival held recently saw hordes of devotees from all across the globe visit Murugan temples and deposit their offerings in the hundis.

Speaking about this, a senior official from the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department said, We are planning to open the hundis, especially those at Murugan temples, as several devotees might have dropped Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes in them. Palani, Tiruchendur, Tiruparankundram, Tiruttani, Palamudircholai in Madurai and Swamimalai temples, which are the six abodes of Lord Murugan, will take a decision first to open the hundis. Meanwhile, the footfalls in temples, especially in Chennai city, saw a drop on Wednesday.

Reports of a drop in footfalls have come in from many temples since Wednesday morning. Though it is not a festival day, even the normal crowd is missing. We are not accepting the demonetised currencies at the temple counter. Demonetisation of the currency notes has affected the annadhanam, or free food, scheme at temples. Under this scheme, people can donate Rs 500 or Rs 1,000 for feeding poor and needy people in temples. As these currencies have been made invalid, we are asking the people to donate only in cheques or demand drafts.
