Worlds fastest chip

Posted on: 27/Jun/2016 9:25:30 AM
Here comes the fastest chip developed in a university lab. This consists of 1000 processors. Scientists from the US have created this one-of-its-kind microchip.

A team at the University of California has invested its efforts to design this energy efficient microchip. This is named “KiloCore”, says Davis, from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. This functions with a 1.78 trillion per second computation rate at the maximum. It has 621 million transistors.

Bevan Bass, a professor in the department said this is the very first chip with 1000 processors, up to our knowledge. This carries the highest clock-rate processor.

Each of the processor in KiloCore can function its own separate program. It is fabricated by IBM using 32nm CMOS technology. It is to be noted that there are about 300 processors in other chips created so far.

The idea behind developing this is to split up the applications into tiny packets all of which can function simultaneously on various processors, thereby producing high throughput consuming very less energy. This is a highly flexible approach as compared to Single instruction multiple data approach that gets used at GPUs.

Each of the processor is separately clocked. Energy saving can take place as each of these clocks can shut down separately as and when they are not needed, said Brent Bohnenstiehl, a graduate student who developed the principal architecture.

The maximum frequency of functioning is 1.78 GHz. Instead of making use of a pooled memory that can be a bottleneck for data, this functions with direct data transfer.

The KiloCore was unveiled at 2016 Symposium on VLSI technology and circuits in Honolulu.
