Telecom companies to instal more towers to correct call drop issue

Posted on: 11/Jun/2016 2:17:05 PM
Telecom companies have promised to install 60,000 new towers at a cost of Rs. 12,000 crore within three months. They hope that this will improve the quality of their services. The government has been pressuring them to correct call drops that have been taking place.

Speaking about this, a senior official from the Department of Telecom - DoT - has said, The industry has realised that the negative customer sentiment is too high. So investments will not be constrained. He had had a meeting with top executives of the telecom companies. He said, The DoT has asked telcos to submit a 60-90 days plan to resolve call drops issue. If the industry buys all the spectrum that offered in the upcoming auction, then there will be no shortage of spectrum even for providing international quality of service.

According to the official, every telecom company presented a 100 day plan during the meeting. These plans were to improve the service quality and spoke about the issues hampering improvement in the networks. The telecom operators also spoke about their concerns regarding regulatory hurdles by local authorities, and also the opposition faced by residents’ associations to instal the mobile towers.

The government officials, in turn, responded by promising to work with operators to facilitate installation of mobile towers. About a year ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had personally expressed serious concern over the quality of mobile services. The latest test drive by TRAI  - Telecom Regulatory Authority of India - in Delhi and Hyderabad was released in June. The report revealed that most of the companies have failed to meet the benchmark on call drops - contrary to the companies’ claims that they have improved the quality of their services.

The Supreme Court had, recently, struck down the order for imposing the fine for call drops. Instead, TRAI has asked the government to give it penal powers. Speaking about this, the telecom official said, Penal powers cannot be one and final solution for call drop and the government will take a view on TRAI’s demand for more powers. But in my opinion, a person cannot be sent to jail for every call drop.
