Free garbage bins distributed by Chennai Corporation in Anna Nagar

Posted on: 20/Jun/2014 11:05:38 AM
The Chennai Corporation distributed free garbage bins for residents in Anna Nagar zone recently. The civic body distributed two bins in green and blue colours -- for biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste -- to more than 850 families in Anna Nagar on a pilot basis.

Each bin will have a capacity of 10 litres to segregate waste. Every day, garbage collectors will visit each household and collect biodegradable waste. But non-biodegradable waste will be collected twice in a week. If it is successful, then it will be extended to the remaining zones.

Last year, Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy announced that gold coins and watches would be given to residents to encourage them to segregate waste. Under the scheme, the residents would get a token for every kilo of plastic they handed over to officers at corporation ward offices. Later, a lucky draw would be held and residents of wards that crossed the target of segregating 500kg of thin plastic would be rewarded. None of the 200 wards has met the target and the officials seem to have forgotten the offer.

Most of the 5,000 tonnes of garbage generated in Chennai everyday is dumped in the Kodungaiyur and Perungudi dumping yards. The corporation says 65% of the city`s waste can be recycled and composted.
