Chennai Metro Rail Project: 45% tunnelling work completed

Chennai Metro Rail Project officials have informed that 45% of the project tunnelling work has been completed.

In the project, there are 2 tunnelling sections. One is between Washermanpet & Siadapet. The second is between Central Railway Station & Anna Nagar 2nd Avenue.

16 km of tunnelling work is complete. Work is going on in the sections between Washermanpet & Egmore, May Day Park & Central, May Day Park & DMS, Saidapet & DMS, Pachiayappa’s College & Shenoy Nagar, and Shenoy Nagar & Thirumangalam.

The construction of emergency exit roads is also being expedited. One telephone for every 100 metres and one fire extinguisher for every 100 metres will be installed.

In the vent of fire or any other accident, the metro trains will stop.

Emergency exits are being built at every 250 metres. In case of any emergency, the passengers can get off from the train and walk across to the nearest emergency exit route. They can walk up to the next metro ril station.

Latest technology capable of withstanding natural disasters such as earthquake has been adopted in the construction. Surveillance monitoring will be done by CCTV cameras.

The tunnelling project is the longest in India covering 19 underground railway stations in 2 corridors.

The first corridor between Eashermanpet & Chennai Aiport covers 10 stations – Mannadi, High Court, Central, Government Garden, LIC, Gemini, Teynampet, Chamiers Road, and Saidapet.

The second corridoe between Chennai Central Railway Station & St. Thomas Mount covers 9 stations – Chennai Central, Egmore, Nehru Park, Kilpuk Medical College, Pachaiyappa’s College, Shenoy Nagar, Anna Nagar East, Anna Nagar Tower, and Thirumangalam.

The fact that the tunnelling work covers 24 km is the longest underground track in India.
