The state government of Tamil Nadu has been making persistent efforts to make the public aware of the important necessity to segregate garbage into 2 parts – bio-degradable garbage and bio-non-degradable garbage.

The appeal is made to the public that the public. citizens have to maintain cleanliness in their respective residential areas!

In this situation, Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) staff has been distributing notices that there would be PENALTY charged if the garbage given is NOT SEGREGATED!

This notice orders that the citizens MUST give the segregated garbage henceforth! As per this, food, vegetables, fruits, meat, garden waste, dry leaves and fruits, etc., are classified as bio-degradable garbage. Plastic bags, cardboard sheets, glass, plastic, newspapers, thermocol, leather, iron, wood, tyres, tubes, and rubber wastes are all classified as non-biodegradable garbage. The garbage has to be segregated as such and hand over the segregated garbage to the GCC cleaning staff!

Further, unused colourful containers, empty insecticide containers, C. F. S., tube lights and other electric lamps, expired medicines, broken mercury thermometers, used batteries, used injection needles, the injection medicine container tubes, and non-functioning meters, and garbage which is harmful to health, oil cans, tins, gums, batteries, bulbs, wires/cables, PVC dolls, etc., are to be collected and given once a week to the GCC staff!

As such, if unsegregated garbage is given, an individual house will be charged a penalty of Rs. 100/- by GCC and multi-storeyed apartments will be charged a penalty of Rs. 1000/- and Rs. 5000/- penalty for those who accumulate large quantities of garbage as per GCC notification!

In case there are violations of the above rule even after paying a fine/penalty, the penalty will be DOUBLED! From the segregated garbage collected from the citizens, they are treated as fertilizers and natural gas  The non-biodegradable garbage is also sent for recycling!

are produced from them!
