14438 Special buses to be operated for Pongal

With the ensuing the important Pongal festival holidays in 2019, 14438 special buses are to be operated from Chennai. 20 advance booking centres are to be set up for this.

In a special notification released by the state government of Tamil Nadu in this regard, it is mentioned:

For the ensuing important occasion of the Pongal festival, apart from the daily operated 2275 buses, an additional 5163 special buses will be operated for a total 14273 buses will be operated in these 4 days. The buses in the New Year 2019, will start from 5 bus termini – Puratchi Thalaivar DR. MGR bus Terminal, Koyambedu, Flexible Sanatorium Bus Terminus, Tambaram Railway Station Bus Terminus, Madhavaram New Bus Terminus, and Poonamallee Bus terminus.

Apart from the buses scheduled to start from Chennai Metro City, a total of 10445 special buses are set to be operated from the other cities during the above 4 days.

After the celebration of Pongal festival, a total of 3776  special buses will be operated from other cities to Chennai over the 3 days from 17th January to 20th January. Further, 7814 special buses will be operated from various important to places to other places after the Pongal festival celebration.

In order for the facility of the public, special advance booking centres/counters are being set up as under –

  • Puratchi Thalaivar DR. MGR bus terminal - 26
  • Tambaram Sanatorium – 2
  • Poonamallee Bus Terminus – 1
  • Madhavaram New Bus Terminus - 1

Thus, a total of 30 special advance booking counters are to be set up. These counters/centres will function from 9th January to 14th January.

Route changes

All the fully booked buses starting from Puratchi Thalaivar DR. MGR bus Terminal, Chennai Koyambedu, during the period from 11th January to 14th January, will not take the usual route of Tambaram- Perungalathur. Instead, arrangements have been made for these buses to travel via Madhuravoyal, Poonamallee, Nazarathpettain, and the Outer Ring Road to Vandalur.

As per the above arrangement, the passengers who had booked for travel from Tambaram/Perungalathur Bus Termini are requested to reach the temporary bus station set up at Orrappakkam (Kilambakkam) and then undertake travel as per their booked buses.

Cars and other vehicles

During the period from 11th January to 14th January, the people travelling in cars and other vehicles are requested to avoid travelling via Tambaram-Perungalathur and take the Thirukkazhunkundra-Chingleput OR Sriperumpudhur-Chingleput, they can take a more comfortable route with far less traffic congestion.

Heavy Duty Vehicles

During the period from 11th January to 14th January, arrangements have been made for the heavy-duty vehicles to avoid the route Madhuravoyal to Chingleput from 2.00 PM to 2.00 AM. With this arrangement, the traffic congestion in the route Tambaram-Perungalathur-Vandalur-Oorappakkam route.

Especially, the buses operated to Thiruvannamalai and Tindivanam from Tambaram Railway Station Bus Stand have found huge popularity from the public.

As the public travel in ththe electric train up to Tambaram Railway Station and take the bus from the nearby bus terminus, where the buses are defeated to take off to Thiruvannamalai, this travelling arrangement is found to be far easier by the public.

It is further informed that for any additional information, arrangements have been made for online booking of bus tickets as well in the websites.
