It is now known that in the last summer the city of Chennai faced severe water crisis and the residents suffered badly. This was due to the absence of rains.

On Tuesday, 18th February 2020, the minister for municipal administration, Mr S.P. Velumani, mentioned about the long term measures taken by the state government to solve the drinking water issue in the Chennai city. Various long term projects have been announced by the government to ensure that Chennai city receives 870 million litres of water per day or MLD.

Earlier, Sholinganallur MLA Mr Aravind Ramesh questioned the government regarding the measures taken to solve drinking water crisis in Chennai. He threw light on how in spite of many projects announced by the government for the sake of drinking water none of the projects kick-started.

Chennai Corporation in 2002 announced the restoration of Buckingham canal but instead the residents living along the banks were shifted to Kannagi Nagar. Mr Velumani later spoke about how the government is in the process of constructing 400 MLD RO plant at Perur near Chennai and how the amount of Rs 6078.4 crores would be spent for this. He revealed that the project had got funding from JICA and because it was a long term project it would take some time to complete.
