Following the Supreme Court’s decision not to allow Tamil to be
an official language in the Madras High Court, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa
requested the Court to rethink its decision.
Speaking
to a gathering of Chief Ministers and Chief Justice of High Courts, Ms. Jayalalithaa
said, ‘“If we are to take the administration of justice genuinely closer to the
people, it is absolutely imperative that the local language is used in the High
Court.’ She also said, ‘“I urge the Government of India and the Supreme Court
to reconsider their stand on this matter and fulfil the long standing
aspiration and demand of the state to authorize use of Tamil in the High Court
of Madras.’
