Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety Inspects Chennai Metro Phase II Trains

Posted on: 03/Jan/2026 11:39:16 AM

The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) has carried out the first inspection of trains for Chennai Metro Rail Phase II, paving the way for the launch of services next month.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is set to begin Phase II operations in February, starting with the 15.8-km Poonamallee Bypass–Vadapalani corridor, deviating from the earlier plan to open services up to Porur first.

According to official sources, the initial CMRS inspection has been completed successfully, while final station-level inspections are expected to be carried out by the end of January.

However, the Phase II entry at Vadapalani station will not be ready at the time of launch. Commuters will have to access Phase II services by using the existing Phase I Vadapalani station via a dedicated skywalk.

During the initial phase of operations, stations up to Porur will be opened to passengers, while the Alapakkam and Saligramam stations are likely to become operational only by June due to pending works.

Trains on this stretch will halt at 10 stations up to Porur and then proceed directly to Vadapalani, skipping the intermediate stations until they are ready.

The opening of this corridor is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in western parts of Chennai and provide faster connectivity for daily commuters.
