Continuous rainfall on the first day of 2026 across Chennai and nearby regions has resulted in Puzhal Lake reaching 100% of its total storage capacity. In a rare occurrence, the lake has remained at full capacity right from the beginning of the year, strengthening Chennai’s drinking water security.
Due to the impact of the Northeast Monsoon, Puzhal Lake filled up completely earlier, leading authorities to release surplus water as a precautionary measure. Once the rainfall subsided, the excess water release was stopped. The reservoir has a total capacity of 3,300 million cubic feet (mcft) and is currently holding 3,300 mcft, indicating full storage.
Puzhal Lake – Current Status
Total capacity: 3,300 mcft
Present storage: 3,300 mcft (100%)
Lake height: 21.2 feet
Current water level: 21.2 feet
Inflow: 215 cubic feet per second (cusecs)
Water released for Chennai drinking supply: 184 cusecs
Puzhal Lake, one of the key drinking water sources for Chennai, has now been maintaining full capacity for the 24th consecutive day. The reservoir is currently overflowing gently, creating wave-like visuals that resemble the sea, offering a rare and scenic sight.
Officials noted that it is highly unusual for Puzhal Lake to remain at full capacity on the very first day of a new year, making this development significant. The sustained water levels are expected to ensure adequate drinking water supply for Chennai in the coming months, particularly ahead of the summer season.
