What is common between Aritampatti in Madurai district, Kasampatti in Dindigul district and Elathur Lake in Erode District?

The simple answer is these are now heritage sites in Tamil Nadu. It must be noted that the TN government has declared Elathur Lake in Erode district as the state`s 3rd biological heritage site.

It must be recalled that under the Biological Diversity Act, in 2022 Aritampatti in Madurai district and in March 2025 Kasampatti in Dindigul district were declared as biodiversity heritage sites.

On Monday, 1st of September 2025, minister for forests and lands Mr. Raja Kannapan grabbed many eyeballs when he announced that Elathur Lake in Erode district would be the third biodiversity heritage site in TN.

The minister spoke about how to protect the biodiversity in TN. Extensive efforts are being taken. He added that TN is ensuring biodiversity conservation by declaring maximum Ramsar sites in India and creating Endangered Species Conservation Fund. He concluded that by declaring Elathur Lake as biodiversity heritage site the richness of the species there would be protected.

It was later revealed by Supriya Sahu who is the additional chief secretary of the department of environment, climate change and forests etc that Elathur Lake is true testament to the resilience of nature and people. Declaring the lake as a biodiversity heritage site highlights the TN government`s commitment towards protecting endangered species and ecosystems.  By this, the wonders of Elathur Lake would be known and celebrated by the future generations.
