Rs. 1,000 Fine for Littering at Railway Stations: Indian Railways Announces

Indian Railways has announced that passengers will be fined Rs. 1,000 for littering on trains and at railway stations.

Indian Railways is one of the country`s major modes of transportation and plays an important role in long-distance travel.

Although passengers have repeatedly been urged to keep trains and railway stations clean, some continue to ignore these appeals.

Despite the availability of dustbins on trains, some passengers throw snack wrappers, used water bottles and other waste under seats or out of train windows. Such irresponsible behaviour can harm the environment.

As railway stations are being upgraded to modern standards under initiatives such as the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, such unhygienic practices are causing concern among passengers.

Since 2012, a fine of up to Rs. 500 has been imposed for littering on trains and at railway stations.

Now, the fine for littering on trains and at railway stations has been increased from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000. The notification regarding the revised penalty was published in the Gazette dated August 24.

Strict rules will also be enforced against activities such as cooking, bathing, spitting and urinating on railway premises, with penalties imposed for violations.

Those who fail to pay the fine may be produced before a court and could face a penalty of up to Rs. 2,000.

Passengers are also prohibited from putting up posters, writing slogans or messages, or drawing on train coaches and railway property.
