Posted on: 03/Jan/2026 11:45:54 AM

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway service to Ooty has been cancelled for the second consecutive day due to landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in the Nilgiris district.

Landslide on Mountain Rail Route

Widespread rain caused by a low-level atmospheric circulation has affected southern districts of Tamil Nadu. In the Nilgiris, heavy rainfall on Tuesday led to landslides at several locations. A major landslide occurred on the mountain rail track between Adarley and Sholayur stations, disrupting train movement.

Train Turned Back Midway

The mountain train that departed from Mettupalayam towards Ooty on Tuesday morning was cancelled midway and turned back after the landslide was detected. The sudden disruption left many tourists disappointed.

Restoration Work Underway

Due to ongoing track restoration and safety works, the Ooty mountain train service has been cancelled again today. Railway teams are actively engaged in clearing mud, sand, and rocks that have fallen onto the tracks.

Passenger Advisory

Railway authorities have advised passengers and tourists to:

- Postpone travel plans until services resume

- Check official updates before planning journeys

Train operations are expected to resume only after ensuring full track safety.
