Chennai Double-Decker Buses to Return After 18 Years; MTC Plans 20 AC Buses

The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) is set to bring back double-decker buses in Chennai after a gap of 18 years, marking the return of one of the city`s most iconic public transport services.

As part of the initiative, 20 modern air-conditioned double-decker buses are proposed to be introduced to enhance Chennai`s public transport network and provide commuters with a comfortable travel experience.

According to reports, the technical bids for the procurement of these buses were opened on July 31, marking an important milestone in the project. The procurement process is now underway, with the MTC expected to move ahead with the next stages of evaluation and finalisation.

The reintroduction of double-decker buses is expected to strengthen Chennai`s urban transport system while offering an attractive and efficient mode of travel for daily commuters and visitors alike.

Once operational, the new fleet of modern AC double-decker buses is expected to improve passenger capacity on key city routes and become a prominent addition to Chennai`s evolving public transportation network.
