How to Open an Atal Pension Yojana (APY) Account: Eligibility, Benefits and Application Process

The Atal Pension Yojana (APY) is a government-backed pension scheme designed to provide financial security after retirement, especially for workers in the unorganised sector. While employees in the formal sector often have access to pension benefits, APY offers an affordable retirement savings option for individuals who do not receive employer-sponsored pensions.

What is Atal Pension Yojana?

The Atal Pension Yojana (APY) is a voluntary pension scheme launched by the Government of India and regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA).

Under the scheme, subscribers receive a guaranteed monthly pension ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 after attaining the age of 60 years. The pension amount depends on the subscriber`s age at the time of joining and the monthly contribution made during the contribution period.

Eligibility Criteria

To enroll in the Atal Pension Yojana, applicants must meet the following conditions:

Must be an Indian citizen.

Age should be between 18 and 40 years.

Must have an active Savings Bank Account or Post Office Savings Account.

Individuals who are income taxpayers under the Income Tax Act, 1961, are not eligible to open a new APY account from October 1, 2022 onwards.

How to Open an APY Account

Eligible individuals can open an Atal Pension Yojana account by following these steps:

1. Visit the bank branch or post office where your savings account is maintained.

2. If you do not have a savings account, open one first.

3. Complete the APY application form.

4. Submit the required Aadhaar and KYC documents.

5. Choose your desired monthly pension amount and authorize automatic monthly contributions from your savings account.

Subscribers under the earlier Swavalamban Yojana are automatically migrated to the Atal Pension Yojana.

Benefits of Atal Pension Yojana

The scheme offers several long-term financial benefits:

Guaranteed monthly pension of ₹1,000, ₹2,000, ₹3,000, ₹4,000, or ₹5,000 after the subscriber reaches 60 years of age.

Affordable monthly contributions based on the subscriber`s age and selected pension amount.

After the subscriber`s death, the spouse continues to receive the same pension.

After the demise of both the subscriber and the spouse, the accumulated pension corpus is returned to the nominee.

The Atal Pension Yojana is an effective retirement savings option for eligible individuals seeking guaranteed post-retirement income through a government-supported pension scheme.
