Shri Sarvamangala Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, Nanganallur

Shri Sarvamangala Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple in Nanganallur, Chennai, is a revered temple dedicated to Lord Lakshmi Narasimha. The presiding deity is Sri Lakshmi Narasimha, who is uniquely depicted seated on a five-headed serpent.

Temple History

According to temple tradition, Sage Jamadagni, the father of Parasurama, wished to worship Lord Narasimha, who appeared from a pillar to protect Prahlada. He performed a Yagna with the desire to receive the Lord`s darshan.

Lord Narasimha appeared from the sacrificial fire in an intense and powerful form. On seeing the Lord, Sage Jamadagni requested Him to assume a calm form so that others could also worship Him without fear. Accepting the devotee`s request, Lord Narasimha settled there with Goddess Lakshmi.

It is believed that the presence of Lakshmi, or Nangai, at this sacred place gave rise to the name Nangai Nallur, which later evolved into Nanganallur.

Special Significance

One of the temple`s unique features is the depiction of Lord Lakshmi Narasimha seated on a five-headed serpent. The temple is also associated with a special Garuda Seva Mahotsavam.

On May 24, 2009, six Perumals appeared together during the Garuda Seva, blessing devotees. Such a collective Garuda Seva is considered highly auspicious, and devotees believe that witnessing this sacred event is a blessing earned through great spiritual merit.
