Chennai to Get Major Boost in Green Public Transport with 600 New Electric Buses
Hon’ble Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru M.K. Stalin has announced that 600 additional electric buses will soon be added to Chennai’s public transport network, significantly expanding the city’s push towards clean, sustainable mobility.
Speaking at the Tamil Nadu Governing Council on Climate Change meeting at the Secretariat, the Chief Minister said that rising traffic congestion in metropolitan cities makes strong public transport systems essential. He pointed out that the 120 electric buses currently operated by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) have received a positive response from commuters, encouraging the government to scale up the initiative.
The expansion is aimed at reducing vehicular emissions, cutting urban pollution, and easing congestion, while offering residents a more comfortable and eco-friendly travel option. The Chief Minister stressed that improving public transport not only supports environmental goals but also enhances day-to-day commuting and overall urban living standards.
