The chemistry subject has not lost its sheen in the Tamil Nadu government colleges!!

This has been proved by the number of students who have opted for this superb subject at the UG level in the government colleges across Tamil Nadu in this year. It must be noted that among all science courses B. Sc (Chemistry) has attracted more students now.

Information is that 5890 seats out of 6786 sanctioned seats have been filled up during admissions in the TN government arts and science colleges until 30th of September. Overall in the colleges, commerce, computer science and Tamil language remains the most preferred subjects among the students.

According to the principal of Presidency College in Chennai Mr. R. Raman B. Sc chemistry course was preferred by many students overtaking B. Com course also. He mentioned that the availability of job opportunities was the main reason for the students to opt for B. Sc chemistry course. This college received more than 15000 applications for just 200 seats in the chemistry branch.

According to the chemistry department head Bhavani, Government Arts College, Nandhanam in Chennai it was clear that job opportunities after completing B. Sc (Chemistry) UG course has been the reason for many students preferring this course over others. She added that after completing the chemistry degree the students could go to pharma, food and allied industries as researchers etc.

It was later brought out by career consultant Mr. Jayaprakash Gandhi that chemistry course would offer more career options for the students other than teaching. He added that this could be the reason for many students preferring chemistry at UG level. He concluded that students after completing M. Sc (Chemistry) have a chance to pursue M. Tech programmes at top colleges once they clear the required examination.

As per the data from the directorate of collegiate education it was clear that admission to B. Sc (Maths) remains poor and just 45% seats have been filled in this year. Thirty six percent of seats have remained vacant in B. Sc (Physics) course. It is said that the interest towards engineering courses is the reason behind the low percentage of students choosing B.sc (Maths) and B. Sc (Physics).

Many students now have preferred courses like BA English, History and Economics etc. Not only these courses, but also other new courses such as criminology, defence studies, psychology, costume designing and fashion technology have also been preferred by many students now.
