Chennai Traffic Alert: GST Road Sees Heavy Congestion Amid Long Weekend Rush

Chennai: Traffic movement has slowed considerably on the GST Road, particularly in Perungalathur, Vandalur and Kilambakkam, as a large number of people leave Chennai ahead of the long weekend and Vinayagar Chaturthi celebrations.

The rush began on Friday evening as residents started travelling to their hometowns for the three-day holiday. Heavy congestion was reported along the GST Road, with traffic continuing to move slowly in several stretches even after 10 PM.

Traffic Remains Heavy on GST Road

The situation has intensified again this morning, with long queues of vehicles reported in Perungalathur, Vandalur, Urapakkam and Kilambakkam.

Traffic near the Kilambakkam bus terminus is particularly slow, while vehicles heading towards southern Tamil Nadu are facing delays. These areas already experience heavy traffic during peak travel periods, but the holiday rush has added significantly to the volume of vehicles.

Vinayagar Chaturthi Travel Adds to the Rush

The long weekend, along with Vinayagar Chaturthi, has prompted a large number of Chennai residents to travel to their native places. The continuous flow of vehicles since Friday evening has resulted in severe congestion on one of the city`s main outbound routes.

Over 500 Police Personnel Deployed

To manage the increased traffic and maintain security, traffic and law-and-order police personnel have been deployed at key points along the route.

More than 500 police personnel are involved in traffic regulation and security arrangements to manage the holiday rush.

Motorists travelling towards southern districts are advised to allow extra travel time and expect delays, particularly around Tambaram, Perungalathur, Vandalur and Kilambakkam.
