Tamil Nadu Wind Power Hits Record 6,578 MW; Renewables Meet 42% of State's Electricity Demand

Tamil Nadu has achieved a new milestone in renewable energy, with wind power generation reaching a record 6,578 MW on Sunday. The new peak surpassed the previous record of 6,339 MW, set on July 8, as strong southwest monsoon winds significantly boosted wind energy production across the State.

According to the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC), wind and solar energy together generated 175.03 million units (MU) of electricity on Sunday, meeting 42.3% of Tamil Nadu`s total power demand of 413.58 MU. Wind energy contributed 118.13 MU, while solar power added 56.9 MU to the grid.

Tamil Nadu, with an installed wind power capacity of 12,273 MW, remains India`s second-largest wind power producer after Gujarat. The latest achievement follows several days of strong renewable energy generation during the southwest monsoon season.

Wind energy evacuation exceeded 100 MU for ten consecutive days between June 29 and July 8 before temporarily declining on July 10 and 11. It rebounded strongly on Sunday, although the highest daily wind energy evacuation record continues to be 124.34 MU, achieved on July 3.

Solar power also played a vital role in supporting the State`s electricity needs. Peak solar generation reached 7,299 MW, while daily solar energy evacuation stood at 56.9 MU. Tamil Nadu`s highest-ever daily solar energy evacuation remains 60.4 MU, recorded on July 6, and the all-time peak instantaneous solar generation is 7,867.90 MW, achieved on April 18.

Renewable energy has continued to contribute significantly to Tamil Nadu`s electricity supply over the past week. Wind and solar together met 37.7% of the State`s demand on July 9, 30.8% on July 10, 33.6% on July 11, and climbed to 42.3% on Sunday, highlighting the growing role of clean energy in the State`s power sector.
