Posted on: 23/Jan/2026 9:35:21 AM

A total of 2.09 lakh people have applied to be added as new voters in 16 Assembly constituencies within Chennai, according to election officials.

The Special Summary Revision of Electoral Rolls in Tamil Nadu began in November 2025. Following the release of the draft voter list, the process of adding new voters is currently underway across the state.

In Chennai, the draft electoral roll showed around 40.04 lakh voters, of which nearly 15 lakh names were removed. Officials identified about 1.50 lakh deceased voters, while the remaining 13.50 lakh names were removed due to other reasons. Authorities estimate that nearly 12 lakh voters among them may re-enrol after verification.

However, so far, only 2.09 lakh applications for new voter inclusion have been received from all 16 Assembly segments in Chennai.

Special Voter Registration Camps

- Weekend special camps are being conducted at 4,097 polling stations across Chennai

- Daily voter enrolment is facilitated at 987 locations, with Booth Level Officers receiving applications

- Special focus camps are being organised for transgender persons and residents of shelter homes

Recently, special voter enrolment camps for transgender persons were held at locations including Ripon Building campus, Tiruvottiyur, Thiruvanmiyur, and Kannagi Nagar (Sholinganallur), where hundreds submitted applications.

Election officials have urged eligible citizens, especially first-time voters, to apply at the earliest to ensure their names are included in the final electoral roll.
