The Central Ministry of Human Resources Development gives awards to institutions IoE (Institute of Eminence) once reviewing their credentials and the quality features to deserve the same.
Anna University has been in pursuit to get the IoE award. One of the requirements to get IoE is the ratio of 1:12 for teacher-student.
However, presently, as per the inside circles, Anna University has 300 out of the 900 faculty positions vacant!
An official shared in this regard, To achieve the academic and research goals under the eminence tag, the university needs a 1:12 faculty-student ratio for which it may need at least 1,200 faculty members.
(The faculty members are now burdened with administration and teaching work that is hampering their research output.)
Once the institute gets eminence tag, we may need to concentrate more on research in cutting edge areas and ease the academic burden of faculty members.
It is worth noting that since the last recruitment which was executed in the year 2014, the university was not able to take in new faculty members due to various reasons:
- A vacancy in vice-chancellors post,
- Higher education department ban on recruitment to redeploy excess Annamalai University staff
- The UGC ban citing a pending court case in the following reservation in universities.
Thus far over the last 5 years, the university has been managing with the help of teaching fellows. Now with the above issue for IoE, Anna University recently calculated the vacancy positions to implement reservations in recruitment based on a 200-point roster system after the state government-directed universities to take department as a unit to implement reservations.
In this aspect, a top university official stated, The governor-chancellor has appointed his nominee and there is a delay in appointing state government nominee. After getting state governments nominee, we will initiate the recruitment process soon.
As per All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) norms on recruitment, the selection committee shall consist of chancellors nominee, state government nominee and experts.
