Rain Likely in Tamil Nadu Coastal Districts Today; Heavy Rainfall Alert Issued

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rainfall across coastal districts of Tamil Nadu today, following the intensification of a weather system over the Bay of Bengal.

A low-pressure area that persisted over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the equatorial Indian Ocean has strengthened into a depression. The system is expected to move west–northwest, intensify further into a deep depression today (Thursday), and progress towards the southwest Bay of Bengal by tomorrow, according to IMD.

Rainfall Forecast for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

Today (Thursday):

- Moderate rain likely at a few places in coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal

Moderate rain at one or two places in interior districts

Heavy rain possible at isolated places in Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam, and in Karaikal

Tomorrow (Friday):

Widespread moderate rain across coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal

Heavy to very heavy rain likely in Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Karaikal

Heavy rain at isolated places in Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, and Cuddalore

Cyclone Warning Hoisted at 9 Ports

As the depression is expected to move closer to the Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coast, First Cyclone Warning Signal has been hoisted at nine ports, including:

- Chennai Port

- Cuddalore Port

- Nagapattinam Port

- Ennore Port

- Kattupalli Port

- Puducherry Port

- Karaikal Port

- Pamban Port

- Thoothukudi Port

Public Advisory

Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea, and residents in coastal and delta districts are urged to remain alert and follow official weather updates. The evolving system may lead to localized flooding and travel disruptions, especially in low-lying areas.
