Chennai Metro: Porur - Vadapalani Metro Line to Open by Mid-February

Posted on: 12/Jan/2026 9:41:32 AM

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is set to open the Porur-Vadapalani stretch of Corridor 4 by mid-February, subject to statutory safety approvals, according to Managing Director M A Siddique.

Following the successful trial run from Porur to Vadapalani, CMRL said this elevated corridor-part of Chennai Metro Phase II-was among the most complex to execute due to dense urban development and a 3.5-km double-decker viaduct. Up-line trial runs between Kodambakkam Power House and Porur Junction will be conducted shortly.

Phased Operations & Connectivity

Passenger services will begin in phases, with trains terminating at Vadapalani initially. For the next three to five months, intermediate stations will open gradually as works are completed. Commuters can walk via an under-construction skywalk to the existing Phase I Vadapalani Metro station and use its Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates until new gates are installed.

Travel Time & Frequency

Porur–Vadapalani: ~20 minutes initially (manual operations)

After automatic signalling (4–5 months): ~10 minutes

Poonamallee–Vadapalani (end-to-end): ~25 minutes

CMRL plans to deploy about 10 trainsets, with 7–15 minute frequency, adjusted during peak hours.
