PET Scan Centre to Be Established at Guindy Super Speciality Hospital Within 3 Months

Posted on: 02/Jan/2026 10:00:45 AM

A PET Scan (Positron Emission Tomography) centre for advanced cancer diagnosis is set to be established at the Kalaignar Centenary Super Speciality Hospital in Chennai within the next three months, significantly strengthening oncology services in the state.

The initiative is being implemented after the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation granted approval for procurement-related processes. At present, mandatory clearances from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) are being processed, which is a key requirement for installing PET scan infrastructure.

Expansion of PET Scan Facilities Across Tamil Nadu

Health department officials stated that PET scan facilities are already operational at government medical college hospitals in:

- Coimbatore

- Salem

- Tirunelveli

- Thanjavur

In addition, the Arignar Anna Cancer Centre in Kancheepuram district is also equipped with PET scan services.

The Tamil Nadu government has now decided to expand this facility further. Health Minister Ma. Subramanian announced in the State Assembly that PET scan centres would be set up with private participation at government hospitals in:

- Guindy (Chennai)

- Tiruppur

- Tiruchirappalli

- Villupuram

Initially, Tiruvallur was also considered, but feasibility studies revealed infrastructure limitations at the hospital there. Meanwhile, Tiruppur Medical College Hospital has been identified as suitable, especially as it is set to receive a LINAC (Linear Accelerator) facility for advanced radiation therapy.

No Additional Financial Burden on Government

Based on recommendations from the TNMSC Director, the PET scan centres will be established:

- Without additional financial burden on the state government

- Without disrupting existing hospital buildings

- Without the need for extra manpower

After careful evaluation, the government approved the proposal and granted permission to TNMSC to carry out procurement in a transparent manner.

Officials confirmed that all steps are now in progress to ensure that the PET scan centre at Guindy Kalaignar Centenary Super Speciality Hospital becomes operational within three months, offering timely and accurate cancer diagnosis for patients.
