How to Reserve a Username on WhatsApp: Step-by-Step Guide

WhatsApp has started rolling out reservations for its much-awaited username feature, allowing users to connect with others without revealing their mobile numbers. The feature will be introduced gradually over the coming months, with users getting an opportunity to reserve their preferred username in advance.

The new privacy-focused feature is designed to make conversations safer, especially when chatting with new people, participating in large groups, or interacting with businesses. Instead of displaying a phone number, users can choose to share their WhatsApp username.

WhatsApp has also confirmed that there will be no public username directory. People will need to know your exact username to contact you for the first time, helping reduce spam and unwanted messages.

Another optional security feature called a Username Key will also be available. If enabled, someone will need both your username and the unique key before they can start a conversation with you.

Creators, businesses, and organizations will also be able to reserve the same username they already use on Instagram or Facebook, making it easier to maintain a consistent online identity across Meta`s platforms.

How to Reserve Your WhatsApp Username

Once the feature is available for your account, follow these simple steps:

1. Update WhatsApp to the latest version.
2. Open WhatsApp Settings.
3. Tap Account.
4. Select Username.
5. if your preferred username is available.
6. Reserve and save your username.

Usernames can contain up to 35 characters and may include letters, numbers, periods (.) and underscores (_). Users will also be able to change or remove their username at any time.

WhatsApp says the feature is being rolled out in phases, and users will receive an in-app notification when username reservations become available in their country. The update is expected to provide users with greater privacy and more control over how they connect with others on the platform.
