The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for 14 districts in Tamil Nadu due to a deep low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean.
Weather System Update
The low-pressure area has moved northwestwards and, as of Friday morning (January 9), is positioned:
- About 170 km east-southeast of Batticaloa (Sri Lanka)
- 250 km east-southeast of Trincomalee
- 270 km east-northeast of Hambantota
- 540 km southeast of Karaikal
- 710 km south-southeast of Chennai
The system is expected to cross the north Sri Lanka coast between Trincomalee and Jaffna by Saturday afternoon or evening (January 10).

IMD has warned fishermen not to venture into the sea on Saturday and Sunday (Jan 10 & 11) as cyclonic winds reachingng 65 kmph may prevail over:
- Tamil Nadu & Puducherry coastal areas
- Gulf of Mannar
