Pongal Festival Travel: 34,087 Special Buses to Operate Across Tamil Nadu
To ensure smooth travel during the Pongal festival, the Tamil Nadu government has announced the operation of 34,087 special buses across the state. A high-level review meeting on Pongal special bus services was held at the Secretariat under the leadership of S. S. Sivasankar.
The meeting was attended by Transport Secretary Sun Chongam Jadak Sir, Transport Commissioner Kiran Gurrala, and senior officials. Addressing the media after the meeting, the Transport Minister outlined detailed travel arrangements for the festive period.
Special Buses from Chennai (January 9 to 14)
From January 9 to January 14, buses will be operated as follows:
- 2,092 regular buses operating daily from Chennai
- 10,245 special buses during the six-day period
- Total buses from Chennai: 22,797
In addition, 11,290 special buses will operate from other towns and cities across Tamil Nadu during the same period.
Total special buses for Pongal travel: 34,087
Return Services After Pongal (January 16 to 19)
For passengers returning to Chennai after Pongal:
- 2,092 regular buses daily
- 6,820 special buses
- Total buses to Chennai: 15,188
Additionally, 9,820 buses will operate between major towns and various destinations across the state.
Total buses during return travel period: 25,008
