Bringing an end to the long wait, the trial run of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) line between Velachery and Parangimalai in Chennai has been successfully completed. This milestone paves the way for the long-awaited train service to open for public use by the end of December.
Final Stage of Work Completed
The new stretch marks a significant expansion of the Chennai MRTS network, covering approximately 5 kilometers between Velachery and Parangimalai. The elevated line has been designed to seamlessly connect key areas including Palavanthangal, Alandur, Adyar, Thiruvanmiyur, Duraipakkam, and T. Nagar, enhancing urban connectivity across the city.
After years of delays, the project has now reached its final phase. All major works have been completed, including electrical installations, signal testing, and track condition inspections. Officials have confirmed that the trial run results were satisfactory, clearing a major hurdle before commencing passenger operations.
Boost to Chennai’s Public Transport Network
Once operational, the Velachery–Parangimalai line will ease travel congestion and significantly reduce commuting time between southern and central parts of Chennai. It will also improve interconnectivity with existing MRTS and Metro Rail lines, offering commuters a faster and more efficient mode of transport.
If all goes as planned, Chennai commuters can expect to board the new MRTS trains on this route by late December 2025.
