GCC Plants 1,500 Saplings at Kodungaiyur Dumpyard as Part of Green Belt Development

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has planted 1,500 tree saplings with piped irrigation and fencing at the reclaimed Kodungaiyur dumpyard, aiming to increase green cover and improve air quality. The initiative, costing ₹57 lakh, includes one year of maintenance.

Key Highlights:

Legacy Waste Cleared:

- 16.67 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of waste removed from the total 66.52 lakh MT.

- Two large land parcels reclaimed.

Bio-mining Initiative:

- Project spans 250 acres and is being implemented in 6 phases by 3 contractors.

- Completion timeline: 2 years.

Fire Safety Measures:

- 24/7 water sprinkler trucks deployed.

Emergency water storage:

- 9,000-litre tank, two trucks, and a 1.5 lakh-litre emergency tank installed.

Project Goal:

- Transform reclaimed space into a green belt.
- Serve as a model for sustainable landfill rehabilitation.
