Coming soon in 2025!! Double Decker buses to run again in Chennai!!

There is some fantastic news for the MTC bus travellers now in Chennai.
Older generation Chennai residents would have enjoyed the amazing experience of travelling on double decker buses. Now, the current generation would also get this experience. Unbelievable!!
The latest news is that the GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has planned to resume double decker buses operations again in Chennai by the end of 2025.
Twenty years back, DD buses were introduced in big cities like Mumbai, Chennai etc. In 2008, the services of double deckers were stopped due to the construction of flyovers and due to traffic congestion etc.
Under the National Clean Air Mission, MTC or metropolitan transport corporation in Chennai has been planning to operate 20 electric double decker buses once again in the first phase. On a private contract basis, arrangements have been made to operate these double decker buses in the city. The details about the contract would be announced soon. Details like fee per kilometre, maintenance and expenses etc would be taken into account and then permission to run the double decker buses would be given.
On those routes with high passenger traffic on the weekdays, the double decker buses would operate. The routes would include busy Kamarajar Salai, Anna Salai and ECR towards Mamallapuram etc.
It was confirmed by some officials from MTC that the double decker buses would start operating in Chennai from the end of this year. They have added that based on the requirements of the passengers more such buses would be operated.
It must be recalled that the double decker buses were first introduced in Chennai in the 70s and taken off the roads in the 80s. In the year 1997, double decker buses made a comeback again in Chennai and operated on 18A bus routes until 2008.
