Chennai Airport Tightens Security Ahead of 80th Independence Day Celebrations

Chennai: Security has been significantly strengthened at Chennai International Airport ahead of India`s 80th Independence Day celebrations. A five-layer security system has been put in place from August 7 until midnight on August 20, replacing the existing three-layer arrangement.

As part of the enhanced security measures, passengers and their baggage are undergoing thorough screening before entering the airport. Authorities have also prohibited passengers from carrying liquids, jam, halwa, pickles, oil bottles, and other restricted items in their hand baggage.

Armed personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), bomb detection squads, and sniffer dog teams have been deployed across the airport. Security checks and surveillance have been intensified at entry gates, terminal buildings, and aircraft parking areas, while armed security personnel continue to conduct regular patrols.

Officials involved in security operations have been instructed not to take leave until August 20 to ensure uninterrupted deployment during the high-alert period. Chennai City Police have also stepped up security outside the airport premises.

All vehicles and passengers entering the airport are being subjected to strict security checks. The long-standing restriction on visitors remains in force, and special entry passes for those receiving or seeing off VIPs have been further restricted.

Passengers Advised to Arrive Early

Due to the additional security screening, airport authorities have advised domestic passengers to arrive at least 1½ hours before departure, while international passengers should reach the airport at least 3½ hours before their scheduled flight.

Drone Ban Continues

The airport authorities have also confirmed that the ban on flying drones, using high-powered laser lights, and releasing gas-filled balloons in and around the airport remains in effect. Passengers have been requested not to be alarmed by the heightened security presence and to extend their full cooperation during security checks.
