Indian Railways Plans Four-Track Expansion of 7 Busy Routes Including Chennai

The Indian Railways is taking steps to convert seven heavily congested railway routes, including key routes connecting Chennai, into four-track corridors, according to senior railway officials.

The number of passengers travelling from Chennai to major cities such as New Delhi, Howrah and Mumbai has been increasing every year. With more trains operating on these routes, railway traffic congestion has also increased.

Similarly, heavy train movement on the New Delhi-Howrah, New Delhi-Guwahati and other major routes has contributed to congestion.

Recently, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the importance of expanding railway infrastructure and improving rail connectivity while discussing its economic and environmental benefits.

According to railway officials, the government is actively working to convert the following seven major railway routes into four-track corridors:

✔ Howrah–Chennai

✔ New Delhi–Howrah

✔ Chennai–Mumbai

✔ New Delhi–Chennai

✔ Mumbai–Howrah

✔ New Delhi–Guwahati

✔ Chennai–New Delhi

The proposed four-track railway expansion is expected to help increase train capacity, reduce congestion and improve the efficiency of rail services on some of India`s busiest railway corridors.
